Kannan Navaneetham has joined at the University of Botswana in 2012. Prior to joining here, he worked about 25 years at the Centre for Development Studies, a renowned centre of the excellence research institute in India which is affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow in Asia Research Institute at the National University of Singapore, Singapore and also as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Population Studies at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. He has participated in a number of global high-level training workshops in demography at various institutions in different countries and participated in number of international conferences.
Taught both technical and substantive demography courses in undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Research interest includes broad areas of Population, Health, and Human Development. More specifically, on the following diversified areas: Mortality and Health; Age Structural Transition and Demographic Dividend; Fertility and Family Planning, Maternal and Child health; Poverty and Nutrition and Applied Statistics. Served as a reviewer for number of international journals. Currenlty an Editorial Board Member for PLOS ONE.
Supervised or Co-supervised number of students for their MA, MPhil and Ph.D. dissertations at the University of Botswana or elsewhere. Five scholars were awarded PhD degree, 8 scholars were awarded MPhil degree and 6 were awarded MA degree. He has also supervised 25 research projects to the students of postgraduate diploma in population and development. Currently, main supervisor for one PhD scholar and Co-supervisor for 3 PhD scholars and also supervising several Masters students.
