Applications are invited for the position of Senior Technician, Geographic Information System (GIS) at the Okavango Research Institute (ORI). The Institute is based in Maun in the North West District of Botswana, and specializes in natural resources management, sustainable natural resource use and conservation in the world-famous Okavango Delta and the Kgalagadi (Kalahari) region. The Institute has a good library (a branch of the University library in Gaborone) and excellent research laboratories. The Institute attracts significant international funding and is becoming generally acknowledged as a global research leader in natural resources management. Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to: (i) manage the Geographic Information System/Remote Sensing Laboratory on a day to day basis, e.g. delegation of duties, supervision and training of subordinate staff; (ii) act as a Safety Officer for the laboratory and report to the Deputy Director; (iii) maintain standards and high productivity in the laboratory; (iv) demonstrate where appropriately competent, the use of Geographical Information Systems (both vector and raster); (v) inspect, and arrange servicing of all equipment and materials where appropriate; (vi) advise on the purchase of materials; (vii) provide training in Geographical Information Systems within and without the University of Botswana; and (viii) carry out any other duties as assigned by the Head of Department. They will be expected to contribute to database development, including the collection, processing, curation and analysis of data and will be involved in map production and spatial analysis for ORI projects.
Requirements: Candidates should; (i) have at least a higher National Diploma or Degree in Geographic Information Systems, Remote Sensing and/or related discipline. The possession of an MSc or higher degree would be an added advantage; (ii) have at least two (2) years’ post qualification; (iii) at least three (3) years at a level of Technician (excluding the period of full-time study) and a record of outstanding service and strong interpersonal and communication skills; (iv) demonstrate competency in practical and supervisory skills.
