FACULTY OF MEDICINE - DEPARTMENT OF SUGERY
VACANCY NO: FM/DS 01/2023 - SENIOR LECTURER/LECTURER IN OPTHALMOLOGY (3-year contract)
Duties: the successful candidate will: (i) teach undergraduate medical students and postgraduate students; (ii) conduct research and/or creative professional works in his/her areas of expertise and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students’ research projects; (iii) provide service to the university, profession and community; (iv) provide clinical care in affiliated hospitals; and (v) carry out any other duties assigned by the head of the department.
SENIOR LECTURER
Requirements: applicants should have: (i) a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS/MBChB) or MD degree; (ii) a formal degree qualification as a specialist in Opthalmology; (iii) credentials which satisfy registration requirements as a specialist in the stated specialty with the Botswana Health Professions Council (BHPC); (iv) at least 3 years relevant teaching experience at a university or comparable institution; (v) an excellent cumulative and sustained record of research and publication and experience in supervising students’ research projects; (vi) at least 6 relevant publications, 4 of which must be peer reviewed journal articles reflecting a spread of national, regional and international journals and/or publishing outlets; (vii) be lead and/or single author in at least 2 refereed journal articles or book chapters. Applicants should also show; (viii) evidence of service to the University; (ix) evidence of governance and social engagement.
Added advantage: (i) a demonstration of effective academic leadership.
The curriculum vitae (CV) should contain a detailed list of the publications; clearly specifying titles of publications, dates published, name(s) of publishers and name(s) of co-authors if any. Publications should be categorised into: books, monographs, refereed and non-refereed journals, chapters in books, etc.
LECTURER
Requirements: (i) at least a Masters of Opthalmology (MMed) or equivalent; (ii) a first degree in Medicine (MBBS, MD, MBChB) or equivalent qualification from a recognised institution; the qualification must be registered or registrable by the Botswana Health Professions Council; (iii) evidence of engagement in research, including publications, and clinical service work.
Added advantages: (i) experience of teaching at a university or comparable institution; ii) evidence of governance and social engagement.
