CHINESE STUDIES PROGRAMME
SENIOR LECTURER IN CHINESE STUDIES (CONTRACT POSITION)

The Chinese Studies Programme in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Botswana aims to produce graduates who are both competent in Mandarin Chinese and able to work in academic, public and private positions where extensive and expert knowledge of China is required. The Programme is currently seeking to recruit one (1) Senior Lecturer in Chinese Studies.
Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to: (i) teach courses on Chinese society and culture (taught in English) and Mandarin Chinese at all levels in the Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Studies degree programme; (ii) undertake individual research or in collaboration with colleagues within or outside the Programme; (iii) provide academic leadership and mentorship to staff in the Chinese Studies Programme in line with the vision of the University of Botswana as outlined in relevant policy documents; (iv) provide leadership and co-ordination in the fields of teaching, research and service for the Programme; (v) carry out any other duties that may be assigned by the Programme Coordinator and Chair.
Requirements: Candidates should possess: (i) a Doctorate in Chinese Studies, Teaching Mandarin Chinese as a Second/ Foreign Language or other relevant field; (ii) at least 3 years of teaching experience at a university or comparable institution; (iii) an excellent cumulative and sustained record of research and publications with at least 6 pieces of research products published by recognised publishers, 4 of which must be articles in refereed/accredited journals in internationally recognised indexing databases; (iv) sustained research output: minimum of 1 peer reviewed publication every two years; (v) scholarly presentations at national and/or international conferences; (vi) lead and/or single authorship in at least 2 refereed journal articles; (vii) publications should be spread nationally and/or internationally and across journals; (viii) some research impact, including but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents, policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions etc. (required in at least 1 of the these); (ix) recognized as being of at least national research standing (e.g. reviewer for refereed/accredited national and regional publishers; Editorial Board member of at least a national publisher in a relevant field; invitation as key note speaker at national and/or international conferences (required in at least 1 of the these); (x) Successful supervision/co supervision experience of research projects/post-doctoral research fellow; (xi) Evidence of social engagement and governance; (xii) Evidence of native or near native fluency in spoken and written Mandarin Chinese (xiii) Evidence of native or near native fluency in spoken and written English.
The following will be added advantages: (i) attainment of Level 5 or 6 in the Hanyu shuiping kaoshi (HSK) proficiency exam (for non-native speakers of Mandarin Chinese); (ii) attainment of Advanced Level in the HSK Speaking Test (HSKK) (for non-native speakers of Mandarin Chinese); (iii) sustained research activity: on-going internally and/or externally-supported research; (iv) research awards and other forms of research recognition, where appropriate; (vi) examiner/moderator/assessor for undergraduate and/or postgraduate projects nationally; (vii) and, effectiveness and experience in running a programme/course, etc.
The curriculum vitae should contain a detailed list of published works, clearly specifying titles of publications, ISBN numbers (for books, book chapters and conference proceedings), dates of publications, names of publishers, name/s of co-authors if any and number of pages. The works should be categorized into books, book chapters, refereed journals, non-refereed works, consultancies and practical media projects.
Remuneration: The University offers a competitive salary and benefits commensurate with experience and qualifications.
