PROFESSOR IN SOCIOLOGY (CONTRACT POSITION)

Duties: The candidate should be able to teach in the areas of Sociological Theory and Research Methods, contribute significantly to the University of Botswana Strategic research themes and emerging areas of Sociological thought.  Preference will be given to candidates with any two of the following specializations: Social Theory, Urban Sociology, Qualitative Research Methods, Industry and Society; Globalization; Social Development Theory; Applied Anthropology; Ethnicity and Race; Migration Studies; Agrarian Society; Sociology and Crime and Deviance; Rural Development, Penology and Youth Studies.  The candidate should be able to: (i) supervise undergraduate and graduate students’ research projects; (ii) conduct research and render professional services; (iii) perform any other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Head of Department

Requirements:

Professor: the candidate should have: (i) a PhD in Sociology or related fields; (ii) at least nine (9) years relevant teaching experience at a university or comparable institution; (iii) a minimum of 24 pieces of research products (e.g., articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc.) published by recognized publishers.  Twelve (12) of these must be articles in refereed/accredited journals in internationally recognized indexing databases.  The remaining twelve (12) publications could be journal articles, book chapters, peer reviews conference proceedings, etc. published by recognized publishers; (iv) An academic book may be equivalent to a maximum of 4 articles in refereed/accredited journals, depending on the quality of standing; (v) Sustained research output: a minimum of 3 peer reviewed publications every four years; (vi) Sustained research output: a minimum of 3 peer reviewed publications every four years; (vi) Sustained research activity: on-going externally supported research (e.g. funded/commissioned) (viii) paper/poster presentations at international conferences at least once every two years; (ix) be lead and/or single author in at least one-quarter of the required journal publications in Sociology.  There should also be evidence of mentorship of early career scholars/graduate students; (x) publications should be spread internationally and across journals; (xi) significant research, including but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions etc.  (Required in at least 3 of these). (xii) acknowledged by peers as being of national and international research standing ( e.g. peer review of new research proposals; reference in research committees; editor/guest editor/reviewer of refereed/accredited national and international publishers; editorial board members of an international publisher in relevant field; invitations as key note speaker at national and international/symposia (required in at least 3 of these) (xiii) evidence of governance and social engagement; (xiv) research collaborations with other institutions or organisations; (xv) research collaborations with cognate disciplines in the University; (xvi)  external examiner for Masters and/or PhD theses internationally.  The following will be an added advantage: (i) research awards and other forms of research recognition, where appropriate.

The curriculum vitae (CV) should contain a detailed list of publications clearly specifying titles of publications, ISBN numbers, (for books, book chapters and conference proceedings), dates published, name of publishers and name(s) of co-authors, if any, and number of pages.  The work should be categorized into books, book chapters, refereed journals, non-refereed works and consultancies.
