OFFICE OF RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

Applications are invited for the position of Director, Office of Research, and Development at the University of Botswana.

Fixed contract position: Appointment will be on a fixed term contract of between twenty-four (24) and sixty months (60).

Main purpose of the job: The Director, Office of Research and Development is responsible for providing strategic leadership and direction to the research and development services portfolio. This role works closely with and supports the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research and Enterprise (DVC R&E) to develop and deliver the University of Botswana Strategy for research and innovation.

Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to: (i) Work with the DVC R&E to develop and implement the University’s research and innovation strategy; ii) Provide strategic leadership and direction to the Research and Development department; iii) Develop and lead implementation of the department's strategic plan policies and procedures which will enhance the capacity of the University to carry out a high-quality research and innovation; (iv) Provide leadership and direction in development of research and innovation policies and guidelines; (v) Liaise with the University academic leadership in research and innovation capacity development; (vi) Broker new research partnerships and collaborations and leverage on the existing ones for impactful research including promotion of research innovation, commercialization, and entrepreneurship; (vii) Works closely with the relevant Head to provide oversight on the setting up of a Technology transfer Office (TTO) and the development of the Intellectual Property (IP) policy for the University; (viii) Manage and monitor the implementation of the University research and innovation plans and activities; (ix) Periodically report on the University research output; (x) Provide oversight to ensure efficient development and utilization of research and innovation management systems; and (xi) Undertake any other duties to ensure effective delivery of the Research and Innovation Services mandate.

Position Requirements:  The requirements commensurate with the duties of the position are: (i) At least a Master’s degree in Health Science, Science, Social Science, Engineering, Management, or any relevant field is required.  PhD qualification will be an added advantage; (ii) A minimum of ten (10) years relevant experience, five (5) of which should have been at senior management level in research and innovation-based institution within an academic setting; (iii) Sound knowledge of developing policies, strategic plans, research programmes, their implementation and review; iv) Proven track record in research and innovation resource mobilization with strong and extensive networks.

Competencies: (i) Sound knowledge of University research and innovation management systems; (ii) Exceptional strategic thinking and leadership abilities including developing, motivating, and managing large and diverse team of staff with a research and innovation-oriented approach; (iii) Experience in developing and maintaining strong links with various key stakeholders including major research funders, industry, regulators, government agencies, and partners; (iv) A sound knowledge of computer skills and use of modern information technology;  (v) Excellent interpersonal relations and communication skills, analytic skills, understanding and familiarity with multi-disciplinary research and innovation; and (vi) Excellent abilities in report writing, budgeting, project analysis, monitoring and evaluation of programme are important.
