DEPUTY VICE CHANCELLOR (TEACHING AND LEARNING)

The University of Botswana wishes to invite suitably qualified applicants for the position of Deputy Vice Chancellor, Teaching and Learning.

Job context

As set out in the University Strategy, the University of Botswana intends to transform into a comprehensive teaching and learning university where students are at the centre of the University’s enterprise. This requires the University to provide access to a diverse mix of national and international students and offering them a quality holistic education that can enhance their knowledge, understanding, and skills and cultivate their capacity to be life-long learners. In this connection, the University is inviting suitable applicants for the position of Deputy Vice Chancellor (Teaching and Learning). This is an executive management level position which is intended to provide leadership and strategic direction in the area of teaching and learning, with a view to fulfilling the University mission and vision as well as being in support of the national vision 2036.

Primary duties and responsibilities:

a) The Deputy Vice Chancellors shall be responsible to the Vice Chancellor for providing leadership through policy formulation and planning, management and administration in their respective areas of responsibilities as may be defined in Part VI of these Statutes, if any, and in terms of their respective job descriptions as approved by Council. (b) The Deputy Vice Chancellors shall be appointed by the Vice Chancellor or Council to act as Vice Chancellor in his absence. (c) The authority and responsibilities of a Deputy Vice Chancellor may be prescribed or restricted by the Vice Chancellor or Council when they are appointed to act in the position of Vice Chancellor. (d) By virtue of office, a Deputy Vice Chancellor shall be a member of such other committees of Council and Senate as may from time to time be prescribed in the Statutes.

The successful candidate will be expected to (i) Lead and direct the formulation and implementation of the University’s Teaching and Learning Strategy and ensure innovative use of educational technology and a comprehensive suite of modern pedagogic approaches that provide a rich and diverse learning experience, from basic operational to transform achieving milestones through to 2029 to a world class university, (ii) Lead and direct the formulation and implementation of the University’s academic program, student enrolment, teaching and learning and academic development and student support plans that ensure academic relevance and institutional and program accreditation and ensuring the alignment of the plans and resources of the Division with the delivery of the University strategy, (iii) Lead and direct the formulation, review and implementation of the University’s academic policies, (iv) Lead, plan and direct the implementation of the functional management of the Division of Teaching and Learning including the operations, budget and staff resources of the Faculties, Library Services and teaching and learning directorates, and create a commitment to quality and effective service delivery for the benefit of students, staff and the University’s stakeholders, (v) Lead, plan, and direct the staff of the Division of Teaching and Learning and promote a culture of excellence and ensure high levels of performance in line with the University’s core values. (vi) Lead, plan and direct the University’s education strategy, providing oversight of academic programme development and curriculum delivery to ensure that students achieve excellent teaching and learning academic outcomes in terms of their progression, attainment, satisfaction and employability, (vii) Lead, plan and direct the University’s academic support strategy including library and information services, academic staff and student development and the provision of teaching and learning services and support, (viii) Lead, plan and direct the provision of value contributing student support services (Student Enrolment, Student Records, Student Health and Welfare) that contribute to student success and cultivate active citizenry and commitment to the University’s core values, (ix) Provides professional leadership to ensure that the University complies with best practice governance and management, (x) Lead, plan and direct the University’s outward facing engagement role to ensure the Development of high value professional working relationships with external bodies, government and industry partners, national, regional and international research agencies and business and generate local and global opportunities to secure support for the University’s ambitions and priorities, (xi) Play a key role in the leadership and management of the University.

Education, qualifications and experience:

PhD qualification with substantial level of achievement as an academic covering teaching, research and professional practice as commensurate with a senior academic university leadership role.

Desirable professional standing:

Professional graduate accreditations and memberships and continuous professional development certification.

Work experience:

(i) A minimum of 6 years experience at senior management level (Dean and/or Research Director and above) in a University or institution of higher learning/training, (ii) Proven senior management experience in strategy, financial and human resource management in a University, (iii) Well established international and local network of relationships across academia, business, and government/public/private organizations or industry, (iv) Outstanding track record of research as evidenced by publications, research grants and ability to manage research project budgets, (v) A minimum of 5 years senior academic research leadership level with a demonstrable record of scholarly research and a track record of research application and innovation.

Tenure of Office

The tenure of office for the Deputy Vice Chancellors shall be appointed for a maximum of two (2) terms not exceeding five (5) years. An assessment for contract renewal shall be commenced twelve (12) months before the end of the first term.
