The University of Botswana (www.ub.bw) is the largest and most prestigious institution of higher learning in the country. It has opened the country's first Faculty of Medicine and is affiliated to an adjacent new state-of-art 450-bed, the Sir Ketumile Masire Teaching Hospital. The first MBBS undergraduate intake was in August 2009. Undergraduate medical training is by a Problem Based Learning [PBL] Hybrid approach, which is integrated and community oriented. The Faculty of Medicine runs a number of Master of Medicine (MMed) (residency) programmes, including Emergency Medicine.
Duties: the successful applicant will be required to; (i) assist the Head of the Department (HOD) in the education of students and junior members of the clinical care team in the clinical teaching platform; (ii) coordinate and manage the residency (MMed) programme. (iii) work with the HOD and the teaching hospital leadership platform to optimise Emergency medicine clinical teaching platform for quality patient care, teaching and research; (iv) participate in relevant research; (v) work with the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Office of Research and Graduate Studies, HOD, and hospital leadership to set priorities in education, research, service, recruitment and infrastructure enhancement; (vi) assist the HOD to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of academic programmes; (vii) act for the HOD as may be required and perform any other duty as may be assigned by the HOD.
Requirements: applicants should have; (i) at least a Bachelor of Medicine/BacheIor of Surgery or other recognised Medical qualification (MD); (ii) a specialist qualification in Emergency Medicine with a minimum of 5 years of post-specialisation experience in professional practice in Emergency Medicine. The qualification must be registerable by the Botswana Health Professions Council with a specialist status; (iii) must have been a lecturer (preferably Senior Lecturer) in the preceding 12 months prior to appointment; (iv) at least I year of distinctive record of leadership and administration of university level institution.
Attributes and skills required: (i) excellent communication, coordination and organisational skills; (ii) strong academic leadership skills and sympathy for the values and culture of the University; (iii) good management, human relations, and sound analytical and coordinating skills.
External candidates must have been a Senior Lecturer in the preceding 12 months prior to appointment and must have had experience of coordinating a postgraduate clinical programme in the relevant field for at least one year.
Duration of the contract: the position is available for one year.
